80 Years Since the Liberation of Auschwitz

International Holocaust Remembrance Day began on January 27, 2006, when the United Nations General Assembly designated the date to honor the victims of the Holocaust. The date was chosen because that was the day that Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet forces in 1945.

Why is Auschwitz such a recognized and significant symbol of the Holocaust? This educational presentation by Jewish Heritage Travel scholar Lynne Feldman provides insights. Hear why Auschwitz became a concentration camp; the reason for the famous gate; and how one man left a message so that his story could be later discovered.

This 9-minute video excerpt was filmed as part of a “Sharing Their Stories” presentation created by Teach the Shoah, whose mission is to ensure that the story of the Holocaust remains relevant and resonant.

Visit Poland with Jewish Heritage Travel and Lynne Feldman, May 9–20, 2025.

Lynne Feldman holds a master’s degree in Holocaust Studies from Haifa University  and brings many years of experience and scholarly research to her work as a Holocaust education professional, coordinating with numerous museums and international organizations.
